I have a nearly 2 year old Compaq CQ56 laptop that has just quit working. I had been on for awhile, put the laptop down, did some errands without turning off the laptop. When I did come back to it the screen was black (as is usual) but wiggling mouse of tapping enter did not bring the screen up. I tried to start several times then took it to my neighbor to look at. He is a cash register programer and is decent with Windows. He hooked the laptop to an old monitor and it did nothing. Next he took the battery out, waited a few minutes, put battery back and voila... working laotop! I was estatic! It worked fine the rest of the night but when I tried to boot today it had the black screen again. Googled "CQ56 has black screen, doesn't boot, flashing cap lock" and found some repair tips. Did a "hard start" removed and changed around memory sticks, still no laptop. Found a "BIOS reset" tip here and tried that. Still nothing... and I really need this thing to work.
Screen has NO activity, on/off button lights, cap lock button blinks on - off... no pattern, Lan button comes on. I can hear a whirring sound like it is booting and you can hear a soft running noise so something is coming on. I have no idea what is going on. Has anyone had this problem or know how to fix it?
