Laptop Starts playing movie on its own...ghost?

This is not an autostart issue. In fact I'm not even sure what it is. It IS about a newer Toshiba laptop with Win8 on it, running VLC player. There is a whole story that precedes this post - which might be the most interesting post of the year on TechSupportGuy....

I am at a loss to explain the behavior of my girlfriends laptop (and her cell phone for that matter, but that's not for this post - although it has bearing as far as the story goes).

The other night we put a movie on before bed. Some Nicholas Cage thing about a drug addicted cop. I was tired and not really paying attention, and so was she. At one point she asked me if I'd seen enough of the movie, and I grunted "yup" or something. She got up and closed the lid on her laptop effective stopping the movie, got ready for bed and came back to bed. We both fell asleep very shortly after. This was about 10:30PM or so.

Some time after 4:00AM...4:30...4:40 I dont remember... I stirred ( I haven't been sleeping well lately) because I heard voices. Muffled. I couldn't make out either voice. As I became more aware of the noise...I thought at first it was her cell phone which was beside the bed. She was asleep beside me, but I thought with all the trouble with her phone that something was going on with it. That these sounds - voices were a recorded phone conversation that might explain the cryptic message that appeared on her phone yesterday. But the sound wasn't coming from the phone...it was coming from the laptop.

The movie that we had been watching had started playing. On it's own. With the lid closed. I myself got up to see. I opened the lid and there it was the movie running... right from where we had stopped watching it at 10:30. I pressed the power button to turn the laptop off, and that was the end of that.

She is convinced that someone she was close to is coming back ( yes, from "the other side") to give her messages, to tell her things. I should probably run, not walk away from this situation.

The geek part of me can't come up with a reasonable, grounded explanation for the behaviour of this laptop, and frankly no good explanation has come from any of the techs I work with either. Nothing that can stand a reasonable acid test at least.

I'm open minded, but certainly don't buy into psychics and crystal balls. The recent events around her cell phone and the episode with the laptop are weird, but no X-file. At lease I don't think....
