Do I need a new DVD drive?

I have a 4 yr old LG DVD burner (GH22ns40) on a desktop PC that has trouble reading discs. The r/w arm twitches at a fast rate constantly seeking but I can still manually open the disc and install s/w. It will not auto-run. The file icons are very slow to populate if ever but after 3-4 min I can run the setup.exe file and it executes fine.

I ran CDCHECK on several install discs and it says the drive is ok. I installed the latest firmware (same already installed) with no improvement. Problem occurs on multiple app install discs that work just fine on a laptop.

Is the drive on the cusp of dying? I can get a new LG (no retail packaging) for $15 at a local tech store.

Any recommendations on a better FREE optical drive checker? CDCHECK is free for home use.

Thanks.

EDIT: just found a registry patch from MS that says remove upper/lower filters. SHOULD I DO THIS? says it may brake other programs. what are these filters for anyway? I have edited them in past on other machines for other problems with success.
