error message on putty

I have Win 7 installed on VirtualBox and SSH installed on ubuntu server in VirtualBox. I have also ExtraPutty installed on the windows machine inside VirtualBox .My problem is that I can't open putty because each time I try I get a screen from putty blank then it goes away. I did get the ip address in ubuntu server by using IFCONFIG. I installed Extraputty outside of VirtualBox on my windows 7 machine. When I run putty in my Windows 7 machine.the putty program opens Then I select the SSH box and the port box changes from port 23 to port 22,I type in the ip address and hit open.It shows a black screen for about 6 seconds then gives my a window that says "Network error:connection timed out. Can someone PLEASE help me .THANKS
