Transparent Gifs with GIMP

I am trying to put together a name tag with a logo on it, using Publisher 2010 and GIMP to create a transparent gif of the school logo to use in it.

I can't figure GIMP out - not sure if the guides I searched for are just old, but I also don't have time to fight with it.

Can anyone help?
