I have Comcast as my ISP at home. Back in 1999 when I got my first computer, we were all (that is, everyone who knew more than me) afraid of malicious hacking from the internet into our computers, so we got routers because they had a firewall which would protect us. So, to this day, I have a Linksys router installed between my Comcast modem and my computer. Is that really necessary now? Or, a wider question, is my router doing anything my ISP isn't already doing? Do I still need it?
