Scanning problem

I had Wndows XP + Brother MFC all in one printer/scanner/fax. MFC came bundled with PaperPort version 11.1.0.325. When I scanned an 8.5 x 11 document, the scanned document was 8.5 x 11. Just got a Windows 7 computer and downloaded same version of PaperPort. Now the scanned version is 8.3 x 10.8. I need the scanned document to be 8.5 x 11. I called PaperPort ( made by Nuance) and they no longer offer support for that version, but would be happy to sell me a new version(14) for $100. Does anyone have any knowledge of this or of any other software, preferably free, that I can use that won't reduce the size of the scanned document?
