Laptop's trackpad not working.

Hi, my Dell Latitude E6400 is about 3 or 4 years old and the trackpad has been playing up over the last few months.

First it would cut out for no apparent reason and stop working (all four mouse buttons and the pointing nub thing) and I would have to restart the computer to get it to work agian. Not a real problem as it didn't happen that often. It then started doing it more and more often. After about a month or two of cutting out randomly it just stopped and started working normally again.

A few weeks later I started using CAD for a University project, the trackpad was being used a lot and it kept cutting out and I would have to restart it to get it working again. It happened three or four times in an hour before finally cutting off completely and restarting the computer wouldn't bring it back.

I thought oh well, I'll just buy a usb mouse and sort out the trackpad when I finish Uni and get home. A few weeks after that, I clicked the right mouse button by accident and the menu popped up! The left button and the touchpad all worked including the nub thing. It fixed itself somehow.

And finally, just a second ago it cut out and restarting won't bring it back.

I have reinstalled the mouse driver and that didn't fix it. I am pretty sure it is a hardware issue, like a dodgy chip, dodgy connection or something. There are no reasons for it to cut out, each time it cutted out I wasn't doing anything intensive apart from the CAD time. The pointing nub and it's buttons are attached to the keyboard and they plug into the top of the trackpad.
Also the keyboard has been working fine, no problems with that. Here is a video showing the keyboard and it's connections.

I am going to reinstall Windows 7 soon because the laptop has a few other problems. Also I am going to take it apart to reapply the thermal paste and clean out the dust.

Thanks
