I purchased a used HP 6730b laptop without a hard drive. I had a hard drive to put in, which I did. When I installed the hard drive I noticed what appeared to be an empty battery slot (about the size of a nickel). When I powered up the laptop it said it recovered from a BIOS Failure, press enter to continue. It booted up fine, the time was off, but I set the correct time and date it holds the correct information over night. In other words it appears to be working correctly without this battery. I've tried to look in the service manual, but it's not clearly shown exactly if this is CMOS battery - would there be any other "nickel size" battery in the laptop? Is it possible for everything to run correctly with NO battery?
To make it more confusing, I found a "nickel sized" battery I had, put it in, but when it powered up, the date and time were wrong and I was unable to get the wifi adapter enabled (it said it was but it wouldn't connect). I then took the battery out again, left the slot empty, powered up, set the time and date and the wifi is working great again. I'm confused why this battery would have an affect on the wifi adapter.
Do you think I'm ok just leaving the battery slot empty? Thanks!
