File sharing from Windows XP to Windows 7

Hello,

I recently set up a new home desktop PC with Windows 7. I'd like to pull a bunch of files from my old desktop PC with Windows XP. However, I've been unable to get file sharing working. I've consulted many online resources for how this is done including the official Microsoft pages with no luck.

The step where my results differ from the examples is that neither computer can "see" the other computer when looking at the network. All I see are each computer's own shared folders.

Both PCs have the same workgroup name, I've enabled file sharing and disabled account/password, I set my Win7 as a trusted home network.

Curiously, both computers can connect to and browse the internet.

Both computers are plugged into a Cisco Systems "Workgroup Switch", which is connected to my Comcast cable modem. I've used this device before to develop indie apps on my xbox from my XP machine, so it seems like the physical setup should be fine.

I have no firewall on either machine, all I use for security is AVG free anti-virus (on both machines).

The only weird thing I can think of is that my XP machine had it set up so it could connect to my work's network over the internet as though it were a local network. I don't know if this is interfering in some way or if it messed up my settings, and I don't know how to find out.

Also weirdly, my two machines have wildly different IP addresses when I use ipconfig. The XP machine is 24.17.xxx.xxx, and the Win7 machine is 76.121.xxx.xxx. However, I googled both IP addresses and both seem to be legit Comcast IP addresses.

The XP machine is unable to ping the Win7 machine's IP address (request times out). The Win7 machine can ping the XP machine's address successfully whether the XP machine is turned on or not! This seems rather fishy to me.

I searched for similar questions but couldn't find any good hints for my situation. Perhaps one of you can help me out?
