I have an HP Photosmart 5520. An excellent quality machine for printing and scanning. Unfortunately, I have had to try two of the same model, both with an ongoing dilemma, which never occurred with my previous HP 5610.

Every time the HP is turned off either manually by me or automatically (after 2 hours for energy saving), Nero Back It Up opens up multiple tabs whose number varies – anything from about 12 to well over 100 on one occasion. Most times I can close all but one tab automatically, but on occasions I have to close them all manually such as when my computer memory becomes very low because of the multiple tabs. In all cases, a new tab resumes, and only then, BackItUp is cleared, until the next time.

Also, if I turn off my computer but Then turn off my HP 5520, my computer turns back on. Again, this never happened in the HP 5610.

I have had Nero installed since about February 2011 and neither Nero nor my computer have ever caused me any problems so, in the absence of another explanation, I sadly believe it’s the HP 5520 causing the issue, even though HP claim otherwise (as it’s their product). It is only the HP 5520, no other HP machine or any other machine/software which has ever caused an unresolved problem, over the past 2 weeks. I uninstalled then reinstalled Nero recently (a very time consuming program to remove then reinstall) and the only time the HP 5520 didn’t open up any multiple tabs was when Nero was completely uninstalled. I use “Back It Up” for viewing recordings, as it’s higher quality and has a wider window than some other equivalents I’ve used before, but these multiple tabs opening automatically has only occurred since I've had the HP 5520.

I have asked around for advice. 2 sources say I do not have a virus, so I’ve posted in this section instead, but please feel free, moderators to move this to the "Virus & Other Malware Removal" section, if you know or believe I do have a virus after all, as I’ve been given conflicting information and am unsure who’s right. HP claim I do have a virus and that my computer is the cause, but the problem is ongoing, and while I respect that Nero is not an HP product, the fact that the multiple tabs appearing has only occurred since I started using the HP 5520, is why I believe the new printer/scanner has a defect causing the problem. I’ve never come across anything like this before.

Although anti-malware, spyware, virus, etc don’t always guarantee detecting unwanted intrusions, they’re generally very reliable pieces of software and I’ve scanned with Comodo Anti-Virus (as part of the free Comodo Internet Security Suite) then the Non-real time versions of Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware and Super Anti-Spyware, so nothing should be clashing, and Nero and HP’s products are not firewalls or anti-viruses, so this is very puzzling indeed. I don’t know how Comodo compares with say Kaspersky for overall protection, but at least for now, I use Comodo.

I’ve also noticed that several programs installed under “Programs and Features” on 06/12/13, most of which I have installed before but not on that date. All I can assume is that they’ve become automatically updated, but felt I should still mention this and give as much information as possible to cover all avenues and help determine the outcome.

My other concern is that, once I buy a new computer, if the HP 5520 is the cause of technical faults, I’ll be stuck with the same faults on that computer.

Is it the HP 5520 causing multiple tabs of Nero Back It Up to appear every time the HP is turned off, even though Nero and HP are totally unrelated?

If not, where is the source of the multiple tabs originating from?

Here are the error messages that appear:

Nero BackItUp has stopped working

Windows will close the program and try to find a solution

NB: Windows doesn’t do the above. I have to close the program manually.

A new error message appeared for the first time (Wednesday 11/12/13):

BACKUP.EXE - No debugger found

No registered JIT debugger was specified.

Click on Retry to have the process wait while attaching a debugger manually.

Click on Cancel to abort the JIT debug request.

RETRY CANCEL

I have also done 3 separate scans (prior to installing the recommended software requested on this forum) and these are the results:

Comodo Anti-Virus: 0 threats found
Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware: 0 objects detected
Super Anti Spyware: 0 harmful items detected

PS: If this thread is moved to "Virus & Other Malware Removal", I'll post the Hijack This, DDS and Attach logs which I've kept in reserve until if or when required. I haven't yet uninstalled Nero, as it's very time consuming uninstalling then reinstalling this program, but will do, if required plus anything else required to help get to the root of the ongoing technical problems I've encountered over the past 2 weeks.
