Help with restoring back up

I have an Acer computer that had the hard drive go kaput. I backed up all of my data on a separate hard drive. The file is called User, which I assume is all of my data from my profile on the previous drive. After replacing the hard drive and using the recovery discs I now want to restore all of my data. I know how to restore it, but where do I restore it? If User is my profile do I look for that file in my newly rebooted computer and replace it with my saved data? Do i save it to my desktop? Can someone please help?
