I just moved to a Toshiba L750 Laptop, running Windows 8 using the AMD Radeon HD8400 driver that seems to be using ATI .dll files (see attachment). Computer is AMD A6 Quad Core.
The response from mouse click to screen refresh is slow in some programs, most notably in Quicken 2013. Quicken ran fine on my old Vista system but now I get sometimes a one minute lag where it used to be instantaneous. I note other complaints of slowness, lag and freeze in the Quicken forum, but no solutions and no one has posted what display driver they are using.
Here's what I have done:
Done a total clean install of Quicken. Run Quicken's file validation utility to make sure the data file is not corrupt.
I'm totally virus-free. Especially Virus check the sysWOW64 folder mentioned below.
Have plenty of memory - 6Gb.
I have booted in safe mode. Quicken runs fine in safe mode, so it's not a Quicken or Windows 8 problem.
I disabled running services by process of elimination.
I read in a post (not on Techguy) where someone had a similar problem caused by ATI update (he did not disclose driver name or version). He rolled-back the update and it fixed his problem. Toshiba automatically updated my driver when I did the first run of Windows on my new computer.
I rolled back that update and still have the problem. I even disabled the display adapter, rebooted and still had the problem.
I have attached a Sysinternals Procman file showing the processes going on in Quicken during the lag between the mouse click and screen refresh. It seems to be doing a lot of thrashing about in C:\Windows\sysWOW64. Procman shows it took 23 seconds to complete the retrieval and display where it is usualy instantaneous. Quicken is running as a 32 bit program. Quicken's exe file qw.exe is located in the c:\progam files(x86) folder. I'm afraid I know little about the display process and how drivers play a role.
I hope that someone with more insight and hopefully a solution will spot this post and reply.
Thanks
