Won't Open up

Operating system - Windows 7. Received an update from Microsoft today which download automatically and then we got the warning not to shut pc off while it was installing. Now the pc starts to come up but only some of the icons on the desk top are showing. Others just blank white. Can't do anything. Turned it off by pushing on/off button. Started back up and selected Safe Mode. Tried to do a System Restore but it doesn't give us any point to go back to. Help
