Computer crashed, is now messed up

I have my computer set to just go to sleep instead of turning it off, but sometimes when my computer wakes up, it re-boots itself, as if it were powered off, but it resumes my windows session. This time something happened and I got a screen and it asked me to choose default configuration or last good configuration. I wasnt sure what happened, so I selected last good configuration and now the date on my computer says 12/31/09. There are also icons missing, such as my internet connection strength, etc. I tried system restore from yesterday, it didnt fix it. What happened, and how can I correct this?
