Need to Transfer Files

Alright so I have an Galaxy Nexus running 4.1.2 with a custom ROM that a friend had put on for me. I connected it via USB cable and turned on MTP but the computer still doesn't recognize the phone. I've tried it on other computers with no luck so I was hoping someone could tell me a way I could get files off my phone. I tried AirDroid but it zips the files and doesn't unzip correctly. Is there an app or some service in which I can copy my files and folders off my phone?
