Backup Disaster

I have a HP EliteBook 8440 laptop provided by work, its running Windows 7 and is tightly locked down so I cannot install or change anything. I have a lot of data on my Hardc Drive which I obviously don't want to loose, our works network don;t have the facility for a back up as they think all important docs should be kept on the network, fair coment I suppose but you know what its like you keep stuff for reference etc. localy for times when you can;t get onto the network and so on. Anyway this weekend I went out and bought a Samsum M3 ITB portable hard drive to do my own back-up. I plugged it in and did a straight forward copy of My Documents. When it had finished I shut down (properly) the drive and my laptop and that was that.

That was on Saturday night, I fired up my computer on Tuesday(I was on holiday Monday) and went to my docs, DISASTER, while all my folders were there, ALL the sub folders and associted files have disappeared. I have looked on my external Hard Drive and the same there. I am devastated thats pretty much 7 years work gone.

Anybody have any idea what happened and if there is anyway to reverse it ?( and yes I do know the difference betweeen Move and Copy, I definatly did a copy !)
