I am working on a Compaq R4000 Presario laptop. Service TAG: R4012US running XP Home Edition. P/N: px356ua#aba w/1.5GB RAM.
Brought in today. Owner tried installing McAfee and it became non-responsive as far as getting onto the Internet and loading programs. I tried uninstalling but it doesn't appear in add/remove programs and there isn't any uninstall program in the program folder. I tried System Restore five times and it wouldn't revert back to any previous restore points. I then performed a chkdsk /r /f and once that was completed the system will not load XP. I get the advance selection of safe mode . . .and all of that but it simply keeps rebooting.
Unless someone has any other ideas here, is there a site where I can download restore disks for XP? It looks as if Microsoft no longer makes that available. It's been a frustrating day to be sure.
Oh yes, I have tried loading the last known good configuration, debugging, etc. Nothing works.
