DVR to VCR Recordings not always coming out in color

I have a friend who still wants me to make VCR recordings for him, so I have my Iview DVR connected my panasonic VCR. When I record for him usually the recording come out fine, but sometimes I lose the color and the VCR recordings are in Black and White. Why is this? If I play the DVD movie directly to my TV it always plays in color.

I'm using and LG 50" HD Plasma TV to view. Its on TV mode when I record to VCR and Multimedia mode when I play the DVD's. It also has usb and HDMI functions as well.
