Boot Screen Problems

Hi Folks,

Although I always thought I was a little IT savvy considering my age I am beginning to think all things technical should be left to experts.

From the usual searches I have found some things similar to my problems but nothing the same. After a recent Windows 7 update I found on start-up my laptop no longer opened Windows automatically but paused at the black screen requiring me to select Windows 7 before installing. Other minor problems noticed at the same time, although I am not sure if they are related to the same problem, the Ctl+Alt+Del no longer is working although I have since found out that Ctl+Shift+Esc does and will open Task Manager. I have also found the left shift key will not capitalize the letter ‘O’, ‘L’ , ‘(‘, or ‘>’ no keys are stuck and all else seems normal.

I have tried the usual windows repair etc no improvement so I re-installed from an earlier system image. This has now introduced a different level of complexity to the problem.
The Toshiba splash screen appears, then changes to a black screen with Windows7/Vista OS and numerous variations to select, the highlighted selection line continually scrolls and will only stop after I tap the cursor several times. I can then select Windows 7 and the boot appears to continue as normal. When the Windows Splash screen appears, I have found that by selecting the restart button a line is scrolling along each of the options, again if I press it several times or start to input into the Password dialog box the scrolling stops.
From the boot screen I am unable to enter F8 and get the Safe Mode, although once Windows has started I can select it via msconfig and it will launch in Safe Mode on restart. The problems above seem to remain in Safe Mode.

I suspected some form of virus or malware and ran scans with Comodo and Kaspersky TDSSKiller all appears to be clear.
I assumed it was an issue with my hardware /software set up so again after re-install I updated all the Windows 7 modules and Toshiba drivers etc, including the 2007 BIOS update. Re below configuration, I removed the Antivirus to avoid any conflict when updating drivers etc. Will re-install asap.

I also followed the Toshiba guidance for BIOS change unfortunately it seems set up for current laptops and not my old legacy machine which still has the' Phoenix Trusted Core (tm) Setup Utility' which does not have the same options.

None of the above has resolved the problem, I would be grateful for any guidance from anyone who has faced a similar problem or the experts in the audience.
