Configure proxy settings Ubuntu Server 10.04

Hi guys,

I am trying to create a web server using Ubuntu server 10.04 running in VMware on my Windows 8 machine. I'm using PuTTy to connect through a ssh server to the server. What I need to do is configure the server to use a proxy to connect to the internet, as my computer is at res at my university and we use a proxy to connect to the internet. I've tried various methods of fixing this but to no avail. Could someone please help me?

Just as an extra note, I've used Linux before to do C/C++ programming in but I am by no means proficient in using it. And the version I'm using is only a terminal, no GUI.
