Home Prem. - connected but can't see network, updates not working

Pulling my hair out on this one- too many issues to pin down a solution.

HP Pavilion a6528p running Vista Home Premium.

Problem:

Network icon shows Not Connected even though connected to Ethernet and can use internet. When I try to diagnose/repair it shows no problems. When I try to connect to a network (even though I'm connected already!) it reports there's no networks available. When I click "Why windows can't see any networks" it reports that I need to set up a wireless adapter - but there isn't an adapter! The LAN connection shows clearly under Manage Network Connections, but everything else says there's no connection and no network!

Windows Update is not working- reports unknown error (80070005). Any attempt to use Fix It fail with error 80072f8f. (Date and Time are correct).

History:
Client PC full of malware- ran Malwarebytes - returned 825 PUPs and malware records. Cleaned. Ran JRT, Adwcleaner, Rogue Killer, and Combofix (and uninstalled each).

Client has installed CCleaner and Revo Pro, also had various Toolbars and Download Managers which I removed.

PC was originally brought in because client removed old copy of iTunes and was unable to install new version.

I believe the registry is hopelessly corrupted, but I'm not 100% sure. Clean install not an option  .

I have created a new SoftwareDistribution folder, attempted to reregister dlls (only about half were found and registered in regsvr32) chkdsk shows no issues. SFC shows errors but cannot repair (never does!)

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the network adapter (even got the latest drivers).

I have done a IP reset.

At a loss at this point. Have had the PC for a week- need to have it finished by Friday.

HELP!
