Educational Legacies - We are Leaving a Pile of Dung

i doubt (hopefully doubt) anyone would wish to leave future generations ignorant and uneducated. however, in spite of the generally intractability and increased polarisation of the states' congress, and the resulting messes -- a person would think we would be leaning toward more functionality and cohension for the future.

while a decidedly narrow scope of examples here, these bits of news could indicate a furthering of sides being drawn. at first glance, it appears as if the youth donning 'red' and 'blue' wristbands  is in order, while arguing whose way is correct. and more importantly, while not much else gets done (aside from legislation enacted, then removed, ad infinitum)

The comic was published by the left-leaning news site Truthout and has been circulating among faculty members on California community-college e-mail lists. It was inspired by the introduction of an automated reading machine to score English-placement assessments at Diablo Valley College, Mr. Bessie said in an e-mail. Previously, English-department faculty members had created and reviewed the assessments manually, a collective exercise that gave them the opportunity to discuss standards..

Michigan State University (MSU) officials will investigate anti-Republican comments award-winning professor William Penn was secretly recorded making to his literature class on Thursday, a school spokesman told Campus Reform Tuesday evening.

"At MSU it is important the classroom environment is conducive to a free exchange of ideas and is respectful of the opinions of others," Kent Cassella,an MSU spokesman wrote.

campus reform (going by their link) is funded by the leadership institute. according to the L.I.'s website:

Quote:

While many liberal organizations exist to increase the involvement of liberal activists, few similar organizations exist to serve conservatives. Because conservatism tends to focus on the power of ideas, most conservative organizations are think tanks that focus on policy or legislation.

The left excels at organizing and mobilizing large numbers of people – activating them in the public policy process. While philosophy is very important, the lack of widespread, active conservative participation is one of America's greatest practical weaknesses.

unless i'm missing something here, universities should educate in all areas (i.e. business, liberal arts, et al.).

is there a bias present that nigh every university is 'left leaning' -- and a cherry-picked (albeit politically incorrect) inflammatory video is presented as evidence of such?

i posit schools should be the very place where pretense and agendas are dropped and frank discussions ensue. they may very well be the final fragment of the proverbial last bastion of free thought.

for instance, the professor being maligned for his frankness and lack of image consciousness -- this a learning opportunity for a student to confront him about any alleged bias he may have, yet instead it will become a political witch hunt of sorts for the professor. the educator has my sympathies for boldly stating his beliefs; the students do as well, for being denied the lack of opportunity to disagree --> resulting in a genuine critical discussion and debate.

and no, taxpayer funded professorial salaries should not exclusively support one political party or another, but that isn't my point here.

we're teaching our children to fight instead of think, at least going by the tactics of this example.
