DVD converting/burning question

I think I may have earlier posted this in wrong section, but Ive got a simple question. I recently got a laptop with windows7. It has a dvd rw. It also, of course, has windows media center, windows dvd maker, etc. I would like to burn some movies (.avi, maybe some .mp4) to dvd that is watchable in dvd players. Ive always had XP until now so I used convertx (found it to be much simpler & faster than nero). Now that i have windows 7 I need to know if one of the installed programs (i.e. media center or dvd maker) is all I need (& my best choice) or if i need/should get a 3rd party software (i.e. convert x or wondershare video converter ultimate) & if so, which one(s)???
Thank you for your time & assistance.

P.S.
1 more question is if a movie is already converted to a .vob format, what is probably fastest (or best) to burn it (& it work in regular dvd players)? Something like Wondershare video converter or 1 of the regular windows installed programs (i.e. media Center or dvd maker) or just still use convertx?
