Battery Management

Hi,

Does anyone have a good strategy for making sure your battery doesn't die at a critical time?

On my old dumb phone I used to just charge it every night, regardless of how much charge was left in the battery.
However, I read that if you charge a battery before drains sufficiently, you will shorten the amount of life you get from it each time. It has memory & remembers how much juice was put in the last charge.

For example, if you charge it when it is down to 60%, it only takes 40% to fill. The next time you charge, maybe it's down to 50%, but because it took 40% to fill last time, 40% is what it will put in again this time. It will say it's full, but it's only 90% full. Next time if it goes down to 50% (which is really now 45%) it will add 40% again, say it's full but only be at 85%, an so on.

Is this true? If so, what is a good way to keep the battery charged? On my smart phone it takes about 3 days to go down 50%. But the last 50% goes in a blink of an eye. It doesn't seem practical to wait until it's almost empty. I never know when that will happen. But is there any problem in charging it too soon? Is there some alternative? Thanks.
