COMM PORT 1 problem.

I have a golf 'game' that uses hardware plugged into COM PORT 1 to analyze golf swings.
EVERY time we use the software it cannot recognize we have the hardware plugged into COM 1 - it's the only Com port on the machine - so we have to go into Start/Control Panel/System/Hardware and disable the comm port, and turn right around and re-enable it, then restart the golf game, and it works fine.
There is a setting in the golf software to automatically detect the correct Com Port, or to manually assign it to Com 1-2-3 or 4, and we have tried all of them (even though we know 2-3-4 are not valid), and we click on 'remember setting', but it never does.

I don't even see a COM Port in the BIOS - i figured that might be messed up, but still, we have to do this disable/enable every time we boot the machine.
It's maybe a 6-7 year old Dell with XP Pro on it.

Any ideas?
