Network icon has red X through it, can't connect to internet

I am using a Fujitsu tablet PC, Windows 7, 64 bit. I've had it for 3 years and it's always had this problem every once in a while. I will be right in the middle of using the internet and it will stop working. The network icon has a red x through it, like it would if my wifi was manually turned of, but it's not. When I click on it and open the 'connect to a network' box, it says "not connected - connections available" But no connections are listed, where there are usually multiple networks you can choose to connect to from a list. If I restart my computer the red x usually goes away and I am able to reconnect to my router. Also, if I choose not to restart it, I can hook it up to a wired connection and it is able to connect that way. This has happened with many different connections, so I know it isn't the specific network's problem. It has been happening more frequently lately. Out of the 2 or 3 hours I use my wifi a day it happens at least two or three times.
