OK, I'm not sure if this is hardware or software problem...can't really determine from what I have -- but if it turns out to be software, feel free to move message to appropriate spot.
My computer is acting up -- it's weird what happens, and it's a bit complicated.
1) If I boot Windows and I have my network (Ethernet cable) hooked to the router, I can't call up anything on the net, things just hang -- I wind up having to shut down, shut off power in order to correct. I then must remove the cable, but then I cannot get to the web.
Incredimail: Hangs.
Chrome: Hangs
Anything else: Hangs...
This is only if the cable is hooked to the router. If it is not, I can do everything except get to the web. If I hook up the cable, it hangs again.
Now, If I unplug the cable, there is no trouble. I've checked all cables, the same problem occurs no matter what cable is in use. The router/modem is good.
If I use Puppy Linux, I have no problems at all, except that I cannot use my Windows programs.
This machine is an Emachine, 160 Gig HD, 1 Gig Ram, Uncertain of processor or motherboard -- but everything was working fine until a few days ago.
This machine was a gift; he had no Disks that came with the computer; the recovery drive was wiped by a data-eraser company...I really wish they had not done that.
So, I have no disks for the system, which is XP.
The question is: What is causing the problem? I'm guessing Windows Drivers, but can't be sure and as I said, the machine functions perfectly IF THE CABLE IS NOT PLUGGED IN. OR if I'm using Linux.
Any idea? Am I on the right track with the XP drivers or is this hardware?
