Connecting NIC cause Win 7 to shutdown in 2 minutes

Friend brought me his computer, what a mess, so I activated the hidden partition, and restored it to factory. Did not hook up the NIC (via Ethernet cable), until the OS was installed and stable. Then hooked up Ethernet cable, and within two minutes, Windows rebooted and continues to reboot unless I start in safe mode. However during my two minute window, in normal boot, the NiC works flawlessly, and I can access the Internet. I have tried:

Changing the screensaver to NONE
Changed the Power settings to Balanced
Checked what was loading in MS CONFIG, didn't see anything weird
Checked the BIOS for anything that might affect the OS, and the shutdown
I setup the Administrator account, and there nothing there I see that would causes this.

Been working on computers since 1988, yeah I'm old, but never seen anything like this.

Its an Acer, quad core, 4 gigs of RAM, has an NVIDIA on-board NIC, 1 TB HD. Nothing out of the ordinary.
The reason for the repair, was the family and my friend was experiencing the BSOD during Internet and file downloading activities. Was able to remove HD and retstore the date to optical media, Have NOT added back in data until I can fix this, and scan their HD for problems.
