I just want to preface this by saying that I'm new to computer diagnostics and repair, and to this board. I will begin by regaling you with the tale of what I have done so far. I realize that mistakes were made, but I will tell you exactly what I did so that you guys have all of the information to help me finish repairing this stupid thing.
I've been trying to fix my parent's computer. It was freezing with green vertical lines on the screen, so after a bit of research, it seemed to be an issue with the graphics card, but since the graphics are integrated, I figured it was a motherboard problem. It's got an AMD Athlon II processor, by the way.
When the motherboard arrived I replaced it. The old motherboard was an ASUS M5A78L-M LX Plus. The new one is an ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3. I chose the new one because I believe that it is compatible with all of the hardware that was already in the computer (same processor socket, RAM compatibility, etc.). I had some difficulty in installing the processor, and in the process bent a couple of pins, but I was able to straighten them out, and got it installed. I also installed an NVidia GeForce 610 video card that I had removed from a different computer. That card was working fine when I uninstalled it from the other computer.
At this point I had NOT reinstalled Windows (Windows 7, by the way), OR repaired the current installation. Windows seemed to run fine, I installed a few programs, and everything was gravy. I was watching Youtube videos and everything. Then, I got the blue screen. It shut off and restarted too fast for me to read the code or anything. When the computer restarted, I ran Windows normally and it ran for a while until I got a blue screen again. I then set it up so that it would not automatically restart during a STOP error and it would save the data dump. However, I really had and have no idea how to access or utilize that information.
After that, I got the genius idea to reinstall Windows 7. I figured it was a compatibilty issue between the old installation and the new motherboard. I had hoped to resolve the issue by reinstalling Windows 7. I was attempting to reinstall Windows as opposed to repairing the existing installation. For whatever reason, I viewed that as better, or more thorough. Anyway, I got a blue screen partway through the Windows installation. Now, I didn't even have an operating system to work with.
So, I updated the BIOS and tried to do really anything that I could do without an operating system. I also attempted to install Windows 7 one or two times (I don't remember how many times) and got blue screens part way through each attempt. At this point I was really pulling my hair out. After extensive Google searching, I read multiple suggestions to unplug and reseat everything that I had messed with during the motherboard installation. I did this, and then successfully installed Windows 7.
Afterward, I was running Windows 7 just fine. I was getting drivers, a web browser, antivirus, video card drivers, other drivers, and some other programs installed. And it blue screened again. I then fired it back up, started installing Windows updates, and various other programs and then it blue screened again. This happened various times because I was considering the possiblity that the lack of a driver may be causing my blue screens. I should say that the frequency with which these blue screens are occuring seems to be increasing. It went from perhaps once every hour or two right after reseating everything to once every five to ten minutes or so at present.
This leads us to the present, in which I should have all current drivers for all of my hardware, and I've got some basic programs, such as web browser and antivirus installed, too. I'm currently running a memory test, since it was suggested to me that it may be a RAM issue. I'm running the one off of my Windows installation CD, with the "extended" test mix.
I would appreciate any knowledge, guidance, advice, or solutions you guys have to offer. I'm happy to answer any questions or provide additional information if you need it. I'm pretty frustrated and I'm hoping that I can resolve this issue soon.
Thanks,
Joseph
