Formatting your C: drive after compression

I have an HP Pavillion W/windows XP operating system. I compressed my C: drive yesterday and I would like to know what is the best way to Format my hard drive, so that I don't lose pictures and music along with personal stuff that I have on my computer...

Is this computer infected? eset, avg, trend, forticlient give conflicting info.

Yes, I read the rules, but this is a business computer with sensitive information and I am not comfortable with posting information in a public forum. At this point I'm just trying to determine if there is cause for concern or it's just false positives and typical windows (XP sp3) issues.

I have run eset's online scanner and it found:

C:\EudoraPro4\Attach\Security_Support_Form.htm HTML/Phishing.Gen trojan
C:\EudoraPro4\AttachOld\account.html HTML/Phishing.Gen trojan
C:\EudoraPro4\AttachOld\PayPal_Limited_From.html HTML/Phishing.Gen trojan
C:\EudoraPro4\AttachOld\restore.html HTML/Phishing.Gen trojan
C:\EudoraPro4\AttachOld\Warning. Still could not deliver email1.htm HTML/Refresh.AD trojan

all old email attachments. No problem.

AVG found:

Trend Micro's Housecall found:

MAL_HIFRM and HTML_REDIR.BGS , not in memory, but in some files on the drive. one an email old attachment and the other as an eml file under data/mcfee/spamkiller/2/..... I can't get the logs into plain text so I'm just approx what it shows. I moved these files to a safe folder and renamed them.

(I've never had Mcfee on this computer, except it might have some with some trial version from Dell.)

What "symptoms" are we expeiencing?

1. icons on the desktop are forced to auto arrange to the grid, no matter what the setting.

2. after the computer has sat idle for about 30 minutes, trying to start a new process (open a window/ application, ie browser etc) takes about 30 seconds to a couple of minutes just to start. If we stay working on the computer this does not happen.

3. the network is "weird." By that I mean sometimes it'll find computers and sometimes not. I can always ping them if I know their IP but relying on the name of the computer is hit or miss. Sometimes it'll work sometimes not. one time it'll work fine, and 10 minutes later it'll not find that same computer.

4. MS updates will sometimes fail or take several attemps to get installed. One (SQL update) will fail every time not matter what. Some fail and I will manually do the update and then the updates will try to reinstall the same update and say it failed.

So the question is: is this computer infected? How can I solve the problem if it is?

Thank you.

New WD Black HDD "Write Protected"

I recently purchased a WD Black 2TB internal HDD to replace the hard drive inside my old and failing My Book.

When connected, the virtual CD drive shows up, but says that the drive may be corrupted. The rest of the partition doesn't even show up under my computer. I can see that the HDD is there via computer/manage/storage/disk management, but I can't format or change security settings on it in any way. It doesn't show up via cmd/diskpart/list volume when I use elevated command prompt either. Using the stock formatting tools and HP's USB formatting software, they recognize the drive, but give the same error. "Disk is write protected."

*Summary -
Doesn't show up under My computer.
Doesn't show up under cmd/diskpart/list volume.
Does show up using formatting software, but no ability to format.

Ethernet port making clicking noises

Hello, my computer started making weird clicking noises, and at first I thought it was my fan, but when I unplugged my ethernet cable it stopped. It started up again when I plugged in the cable and makes even more noise when I watch videos. Is there a fix to this?

back up, how important?

I've been backing up my computer to an external drive for some time now with mixed successes. I've recently upgraded from Vista to Wind 7 and now it seems to be more and more complicated but that's not what I'm asking about . When I do a back up it to takes up so much space on my external drive and I wonder if it's all necessary. I only really want to save my pictures and my documents. If the worst was to happen every thing else could be reinstalled or re established. I tried to make my own choices through windows back up but that's very confusing and I ended up doubling up, dual imaging? and got more than I wanted anyway.
I just wanted to know really how important is a back up and is it a good idea for me to just manually back up/save the things I want and perhaps, if I'm not asking too much, the best way to go about it.

External HDD issues any suggestions?

Hi guys,

Thanks for taking the time to read this. We have a 2TB external hard drive and over the past couple years it's become almost full. Recently, one of the folders that contains over half of our data is showing up empty when we try to open it, although the HDD properties says the data is still there. Any attempts to copy stuff into and out of the drive from the others folders progress really, really slowly.

So, we run chkdsk through cmd.exe and we have it scan the entire drive. This fixes the problem and we get all of our files back, but only temporarily. The next time we plug in the HDD, the same thing happens.

The general response we've gotten from others is that the HDD might be failing. This is really a problem for us because it's got several years worth of files on it, and we don't even have enough space on any of our computers to back up all the files.

Any ideas of what might be the issue, or how to fix it? The HDD is about 2 years old.

No Audio on YOU TUBE and other Websites.

I own a HP 7800 DC Desktop currently running Windows 8 and have no Audio when accessing You Tube and other Websites where sound is required.

Does anything have to be enabled in Configuration ?. What and where ?.
I've tried unmuting the Speaker Icon without success.

I may have to buy a set of Speakers if Windows 8 does'nt support Audio.

Internet and computer slow and freezing

Hello. I am having serious problems with my desktop. I have been experiencing slow internet. I am using a wireless connection on my desktop. I can't get a wired connection at this time. Sometimes my internet runs really well and fast then it's non existant again. Yesterday I was playing facebook games and the page started to get stuck and then IE asked me to recover page which I did then I checked for solutions then a mini box popped up and asked me to fix problem so I clicked OK which was a big mistake. This installed something called HomeTab on my computer which hijacked my browser settings/homepage settings. I immediately uninstalled it and reset my homepages back to what they were before but now I cannot stay connected to the internet or do much of anything. Windows explorer is also slow. My computer is 5 years old and dragging, freezing like crazy. When my computer acts this way, so does the internet. I feel like something is dragging it down. I've run AVG scan which cleaned up some files, I ran Malware Bytes until it came up clean but the computer and internet is still slow. Opening folders take longer than it should. Here is my HJT log. Help would be appreciated. Thank you.

How can it be disabled ?. Please be detailed.

Another unwanted Screen is Blue with 3 or 4 Boxes that appears when going back 1 page.

Why is it necessary and can it also be disabled ?. How and where ?.

What is kdmoup.exe?

Windows 7 is not shutting down because kdmoup.exe is still running. This has not happened before! I tried searching for this program in Windows Explorer, but it can't be found. I suspect this is some sort of malware. How do I get rid of it? I'm reluctant to shut down my computer.

What happened I lost everything!!??

I am so bummed I have no clue what happened. I traveled to my friends in another state I turned on my Laptop and everything was wiped away. All my documents, pictures, video's and even my web pages were wiped cleaned and all new IE Firefox broswer needless to say, I am shocked. My favorites all gone.

I was having issues with the wireless connection but what the heck does it have to do with wiping everything clean?

Help! I am in tears.:(

Is there a way to get it all back?

Nvidia Streaming? PC - PC?

0
0
I've been wondering for a while now, is it possible to stream games (or any 3d video intensive+low latency applications) to another computer from a powerful pc/server?

Its been on my mind for quite a while now. (Wayyy before Nvidia shield was thought up of) but I've found no real solution to this problem. I've tried remote desktop connections with applications like splashtop or logmein. but none of them can provide smooth video streaming with low latency. However, there is an application that is dedicated to streaming games from a server to another computer and it is called "streammygame". The problem with it is that application is old(hasn't been updated in ages), has bad compression for video and horrendous latency (for a LAN network). But, the biggest kick in the teeth for me about that program is that it has horrendous streaming support for steam ( if at all). (I don't want to create a negative image for this piece of software. It just doesn't work for me and I think the creator of this has long disconnected support. I believe this program has potential,)

Now, Nvidia has recently (a few months ago) announced their GRID Servers. As well as their shield android gaming handheld. As some of you may know, the main attraction of the shield is the ability to stream games from a desktop to the handheld.
My question is, has Nvidia released this technology for PC-PC streaming?

My apologies for this long explanation.
Thank you for taking this time to read what I have to say.
Thanks in advance. :)

HP Precision Scan 3400c LTX scanner software

0

After my power module for this scanner failed, I got a new module, and the scanner powered up. I can use the scanner using XP's Scanner and Camera Wizard, but the HP software for the scanner, designated LTX, will not work - a pop up message appears stating that scanner could not be initialized - scanner not found. I am sure that the obvious solution would be for me to reinstall the software using the CD that came with the scanner, but I am reluctant to do this as I apparently have the driver installed ok - the scanner is recognized in Device Manager and under Scanners and Cameras in Control Panel - and, as stated, I can use it with the XP Wizard. Any suggestions appreciated.

TV scart input help

Ok, I think I already know the answer to this question, but here goes.

Simply put the scart in the back of my old telly is getting dodgy. Sometimes my picture just disappears for no reason and if I wifgle the scart lead in the back it returns. But it's getting harder and harder to get a stable picture from it. Is there any way to fix this, or is this it for my much loved, almost older than I am, tv?

I have a three year old Dell flat screen 23" HD monitor that started having problems about 3 weeks ago. I went to boot up my pc one morning and the monitor was black, blue lite on, but black screen. I called Dell and said to change out the cable from pc to monitor. I did that but same problem. I then unplugged the pwr cord from the back of the monitor and replugged it and the screen came on properly. The monitor worked great all day and I shut off the pc at night. Amber lite still on the monitor. Next morning, I turn on the pc and same thing, black screen, and now no amber or blue lite either. I unplugged and replugged about 6 times beofore the monitor came on, and worked well all day, until the next moring,, and this has been occuring each day for 3 weeks. I'm thinking a software problem on my Acer, but really don't know, but this is really a pain. Have not tried another monitor as I don't have one, but, the Dell works fine while its on. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Have also read online that many others are having the same problem.

Security Center Failure / Bad Shutdowns

I'm running under Windows 7. Yesterday my system failed to shut down normally, and upon reboot, application icons failed to activate their respective programs...

Both antivirus and anti-malware scans didn't detect any issues. But I did get error messages telling me that "Windows Security Center can't be started," "System Protection is turned off (in System Restore)," and (upon a manual shutdown, with a big red "X" showing), "Failure to display security and shutdown options..."

I am able to run Win 7 in Safe Mode. The system boots OK into Win 7 normal mode, but nothing can be invoked after the Desktop icons finish loading...

How can I get my system operating normally again?

Thanks for any feedback!
